Healthier alternatives for your fast food favourites...

We all love a good takeaway or cheeky fast food dine-in! But is it worth all of the calories and fat that goes with it? On the odd occasion, yes.. give me a greasy burger or pizza! But with 1 in 10 Brits getting a takeaway/fast food at least once a week, it’s no wonder the obesity and heart disease rates are climbing.

Eating healthy doesn’t have to be boring... check out 4 of my healthy alternatives to your fast food favs below!

Homemade KFC

Instead of indulging on a bargain bucket stacked full of calories, why not make your own chicken and chips at home? Cut your chicken up into bite-size pieces, dip in a bowl of egg and then coat in whole meal bread-crumbs. Line them up on a baking tray and bake in the oven for 20-30 minutes or until cooked through (add some fry light or grease proof paper to prevent the chicken from sticking). As for the chips, cut up a potato into thin strips, spray on some fry light, add some salt, pepper and paprika, and bake for 20-30 minutes! And voila! You’ve halved your calorie intake, but still got a scrummy dinner!

Feeling a bit of pizza?

Who doesn’t love a pizza (one of my personal favs!) But to reduced the calories by up to two thirds, try this healthy (and super easy) alternative! Grab a wrap, smother in tomato purée or passata and then add your toppings (told you it was easy)... you can be as creative as you like here! Obviously, the more cheese and fatty ingredients, the higher the calories, so if you’re wanting to stick to a low calorie meal, add more lean meat and veggies! Bake your wrap pizza for 10 minutes and enjoy!

Fish and Chips... without the heart attack

This British fav is a hard one to beat, but it’s always nearly swimming in oil before it even reaches your plate... and (aside from the obvious weight gain) this can lead to huge heart problems later on down the line. Instead, why not buy a nice lean bit of haddock or cod, place on some tin foil, add a bit of fry light and some seasoning and bake for 20-25 minutes! You can make chips to go with it as above, or serve with a side salad if you’re being extra good!

The American classic

You can’t go wrong with a good old cheeseburger... except for the calories and fat content that comes with it! So why not make your own? Get the extra lean mince (you can go for turkey mince for even fewer calories), add some chopped onion, some mixed herbs, and mix together with an egg. Then divide your mixture onto 4-6 balls and flatten/shape into your patty. Add them to a frying pan and turn frequently for 10-15 minutes. These can be served ‘naked’ if you’re being really good, or put your burger into a whole meal roll and add some low-fat cheese (if you want). Serve with homemade chips or a side salad! Not quite Five Guys/Maccy D’s... but you’ll get a much meatier burger with half the calories!
