Why joining a team sport can be great for your mind, body and soul!



Are you tempted to join a new sports club and try something new? But motivation and/or confidence is lacking? While the idea of joining a sports team may be quite daunting, and that goes for any age, there are many positive benefits to taking that first step!

Check out some of the benefits below and hopefully this will give you the motivation or push that you need!


Help to reduce obesity and increase overall health

I know, I know of this one is an obvious one, BUT one that is very much overlooked in todays society. “The Health Survey for England 2019 estimates that 28.0% of adults in England are obese and a further 36.2% are overweight” (C.Baker, 2021). These are astounding figures and something we should be taking action on. After all, you only get one body and lifestyle choices play a huge role in developing some diseases and lower the quality of life.


Improve confidence

By doing things slightly out of your comfort zone, it helps to improve your confidence by learning new skills and over coming challenges. Improved confidence can lead to a more positive outlook and a higher likelihood of moving forwards with people and opportunities.


Better social life

Joining a local sports club (or any club for that matter) is great for your social life. You get to meet new people and forge new relationships. You become part of a community and network of like minded people that can have a really positive influence on your life. Having friends and people to share problems with, have a laugh with and a glass of wine down the pub with, helps support your mental well-being tenfold!


Having time for yourself

Being part of a sport or club is a great time for you to have time to yourself away from usual family and friendship circles. And while being away from your daily routines and distractions, running around a court/pitch is also a fab way to de-stress - mostly because you don’t have time to think about anything other than the game/drills! It’s a fun things to do that can be just for you!


Personal development

Being part of a team can help to develop your personal skills, and I don’t mean learning skills specific to the sport - although this is also good. I mean skills such as communication, leadership and organisation. Not only that but having opportunities to get involved on a committee or event organising!
